History of Peterson
Peterson, Utah is a small town in Morgan County. It is so small, in fact, that it is hard to believe that at one time it was the County Seat of Morgan County. If you don’t know, the Capital Seat is essentially the capital city of a county. That spot has long been overtaken by Morgan, but there was a time when Peterson was the most influential city in Morgan County. Back then, the settlement was called Weber City for the nearby Weber River. The town was also called Littleton before it was finally called Peterson. This name was given to honor one of the town’s earliest settlers: Charles Sreeve Peterson.
Today, Peterson is still a small town with a few hundred residents. Though this town is small, there are still plenty of reasons to live there. The town is just West of Morgan City, which is home to East Canyon State Park. That state park gives residents of both Morgan and Peterson a great place to spend a day out on East Canyon reservoir boating, swimming, or fishing. If you aren’t into water activities, you can explore the parks many trails on foot, or on a bicycle! There are also ATV options if you have a need for speed and adventure! Maybe you are just looking for a good camping site—East Canyon has a great one! Whatever outdoor adventure you’re seeking, you can find it at East Canyon State Park.
The Weber River is another great feature to enjoy if you are a resident of Peterson. This river, once the town’s namesake, offers fun water activities for everyone! The river-rafting excursions offered by nearby companies are fun for the whole family. Knowledgeable guides talk you through the journey, and the white water is mellow enough for the little ones to enjoy themselves. If you’re looking to up the ante on thrills, try taking on the river in a tube instead of a raft. Flying down the river solo in a tube is a great way to get your heart rate up! Even if you don’t actually want to ride the river, you can still enjoy its beautiful mark on the Peterson landscape.
