The History of Clearfield
In the beginning, Native Americans referred to the Clearfield area as “the land of wind and sand.” That, you might notice, sounds nothing like the name the city has now. It turns out when white men settled the area in 1877, they renamed “Sand Ridge” to “Clearfield” in an effort to draw in farmers and other agriculturists. That name change did not immediately cause farmers to rush to the area for new land, but when the Davis and Weber Counties Canal was built in 1884, Clearfield became something like its name. With this new water presence, the population of the city boomed! Time passed and eventually the peaceful farming settlement became the city that we know today.
